Brian Bird, DVM, PhD, MSPH, is the Director of the One Health Institute Laboratory and Professor of Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases. Dr. Bird’s work is focused on novel and known high-consequence viral zoonoses. He has an active research program in California, Sierra Leone and Tanzania that involves both the animal and human health sectors including virus discovery, virus-host ecology, and the development of countermeasures ranging from vaccines to community-based risk mitigation and interventions. Previously, Dr. Bird served as veterinary medical officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Viral Special Pathogens Branch, and prior to that was a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Kazakhstan.
